Bryan:
What is your name and what do you play
in the band?
Matt: My name is Matt.
I play bass and "the Sims"
on game boy.
Bryan: How was it like
to work with Mark Hoppus on the new
album?
Matt: It was a lot
of fun. He's a great person with a good
mix of energy and laid-backness. That's
not really a word, but it makes sense,
right?
Bryan: How long did
it take to write and record "Commit
This To Memory"?
Matt: We wrote some
of the songs on CTTM in breaks between
tours within about a 1 and a half year
period. About half of the songs that
ended up on the record were written
in the 3 weeks before we went into the
studio. We recorded for about 5 1/2
weeks in LA.
Bryan: How do you think
this album is different from the last?
Matt: We had more time
and a bigger budget to spend more time
on background vocals and more textural
instrumentation (piano, layered guitars,
keyboards, etc).
Bryan: How does the
writing process go for band?
Matt: It usually starts
with one part, usually on guitar. Sometimes
Justin will have a vocal melody ready
and we'll build from there. One song
was built around a drum beat that Tony
had come up with. It really depends
on the situation. Usually, we all contribute
our own parts.
Bryan: Any band that
you haven't played with that you would
like to?
Matt: Pixies, Weezer,
Channels, Foo Fighters, The Cure, Radiohead.
A band can dream, right?
Bryan: Who are some
of you influences?
Matt: Pixies, Ben Folds,
Jawbox, Braid, Fugazi
Bryan: What bands have
you been listening to lately?
Matt: The Cure, Meshuggah,
Nightrage, Nine Inch Nails, Fall Out
Boy.. to name just a few
Bryan: What do you
do in you spare time?
Matt: Listen to music,
read, play the Sims on game boy, nap,
watch "Scrubs", sweat (we're
on Warped Tour right now)
Bryan: Anything you
would like to add?
