| Note: We at
punkisnotdead would like to thank Keith
at Epitaph Records for sending these
questions to Nick 13 of Tiger Army and
Nick 13 for taking the time out of his
day to answer these questions. |
Bryan:
How is Fred Hell doing after what happen
last March?
Nick 13: Fred's doing
very well -- we've done two major tours
with him since the shooting: one in
November/December with Rancid and 30
shows in the U.S. in April & May.
His live drumming is sounding better
than ever.
Bryan: How long did
it take to write and record "III:
Ghost Tigers Rise"?
Nick 13: There's no
real way to judge the writing -- it's
done very slowly and over a long period
of time, it's a process that never stops.
Some of the songs or elements of songs
were started years ago at this point.
The recording was four months of work
done over a period that started in late
Sept. '03 and lasted until the end of
March '04. It was broken up into different
sessions because we did a two-leg tour
with Rancid and took a little time off
for the holidays.
Bryan: Who does most
of the songwriting in the band?
Nick 13: I do all of
the songwriting.
Bryan: How do you think
this album is different from the last?
Nick 13: It's got elements
of the last album and the first album,
but the sound has moved forward somehow.
It's closer to what I hear in my head.
The tempos are more mid-tempo in general,
whereas the last album was prettymuch
fast all the way though, to a fault
sometimes I felt. This record also has
a bit of an eighties vibe to it as well
-- eighties dark pop as well as eighties-style
British psychobilly.
Bryan: How would you
best describe Tiger Army's sound?
Nick 13: We call it
American psychobilly -- a version of
the European psychobilly sound (which
originally derives from punk rock and
rockabilly) that's done with our own
unique twist.
Bryan: Where is your
favourite place to play and why?
Nick 13: I'd be too
hard to pick just one -- Southern California
has some of the best crowds, but there's
also the pressure of playing a "home
show" with friends on the guest
list and all that stuff to worry about.
There are a lot of different cities
and countries that are great places
for us, both show-wise and otherwise.
Bryan: What bands would
you like to tour with?
Nick 13: I'd like to
tour with Morrissey, Social Distortion,
AFI. We've played with AFI, of course,
but never a full tour -- our schedules
have never matched up.
Bryan: Any plans to
tour in Canada, Europe or Asia in support
of the new album?
Nick 13: We hope to
visit all three. We will be playing
a few shows on the Eastern Coast of
Canada for this summer's Warped Tour,
but a full Canadian tour is something
we plan on for sure. We'll definitely
return to Europe on this record and
I hope we can go back to Japan as well,
we had a great time there in 2001!
Bryan: Who are some
of you influences?
Nick 13: That's not
something I ever think about at this
point, it's been a long time since I've
heard anything new that really blew
me away ... years.
Bryan: What's in you
cd player at the moment?
Nick 13: I've been
listening to the new Morrissey album
a lot, that's a great record.
Bryan: What do you
do in you spare time?
Nick 13: There's not
much that's not related to Tiger Army,
but I like to watch movies, read, get
tattooed...
Bryan: Anything you
would like to add?
Nick 13: Thanks for
the interview, and thanks to everyone
who supports us in Canada. We WILL make
it up there for a proper tour! Keep
an eye on our website for that and much
more: tigerarmy.com.
I hope people pick up the new album,
we're really excited about it. Stay
sick! |
